URIBL

Overview

URIBL (Uniform Resource Identifier Blacklist) is a specialized database that contains a list of URLs (web addresses) deemed to be associated with unwanted or malicious content. These URLs are often found in spam emails, phishing campaigns, or other deceptive online practices.

Unlike traditional DNSBLs that focus on who is sending the mail (IP reputation), URIBL focuses on what is inside the mail—specifically domains and URLs found in email bodies. URIBL lists domains that appear in spam, NOT where they were sent from.

Impacts

This listing occurs at the domain level (not IP level). When your domain is listed on URIBL, emails containing links to your domain will be flagged or blocked by systems that utilize the URIBL service. This can happen even if your sending IP is clean and your email authentication (SPF, DKIM, DMARC) is properly configured.

URIBL listings add spam points rather than causing outright rejection, but those points accumulate. A URIBL hit combined with other factors often pushes mail over the spam threshold.

Mitigation Process

To better understand the potential problems that caused the listing, review the URIBL website. Once you have reviewed, you should then:

  1. Find and correct the root cause of the listing (e.g., compromised website, phishing content, malware distribution, or spam-related activities associated with your domain).
  2. Visit the URIBL Lookup page to check your domain status and submit a delist request. You will need to register for an account to submit removal requests.
  3. Provide justification and evidence that the issues have been resolved. The URIBL team will review your request and may ask for additional information.
  4. Wait for the review process to complete. Processing can take several days.

Important: The issue must be resolved prior to submitting a removal request. URIBL aims for zero false positives, so you must demonstrate legitimate ownership and use of the domain. Being honest and transparent about what caused the listing and how it was resolved will help achieve a faster resolution.
