All email status and event data in Aurora SendCloud is retained for 6 months by default, giving you extensive historical insights.
Monitor your email performance across four essential status categories to optimize delivery success and identify improvement opportunities:
Successfully delivered to the recipient's inbox. The email reached its final destination and was accepted by the mailbox provider.
Currently in progress. Your email is queued or being processed through our delivery infrastructure.
Temporary delivery failure. The recipient server temporarily rejected the email or accepted it first and later reported a delivery issue.
Permanent delivery failure. Issues include invalid addresses, hard bounces, or suppression list blocks.
Understanding Email Failures
Hard Bounce vs Soft Bounce
Hard/Soft bounce describes whether the failure is permanent or temporary.
Bounces are delivery failures reported by a recipient's mail provider. Aurora SendCloud separates these failures into permanent and temporary categories so you can decide whether to remove an address, retry delivery, or investigate sending reputation.
Hard Bounce means the email cannot be delivered permanently. Common causes include invalid email addresses, non-existent mailboxes, or recipient-side policies that permanently reject the message. In Aurora SendCloud, these failures are typically reflected under Invalid Email and should be treated as addresses that need cleanup or suppression review.
Soft Bounce means the email cannot be delivered temporarily. Common causes include a full mailbox, temporary recipient server issues, IP or domain rejection, or spam filtering. These addresses may become deliverable later, so review the bounce reason before removing them from your list.
Synchronous vs Asynchronous Bounces
Synchronous/Asynchronous bounce describes when the failure is reported.
What Are Synchronous and Asynchronous Bounces?
Synchronous Bounces occur during the SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) conversation between Aurora SendCloud and the recipient's mail server. When our system attempts to deliver your email, the recipient server immediately rejects it with a 4xx (temporary) or 5xx (permanent) error code. This rejection happens in real-time, during the same connection session.
Asynchronous Bounces (also known as Out-of-Band bounces or Delayed bounces) occur after the initial SMTP session has completed successfully. The recipient server initially accepts the email with a 250 OK response, then later discovers it cannot deliver the message. The server then sends a Non-Delivery Report (NDR) back to Aurora SendCloud, typically to the Return-Path address.
Key Difference: Synchronous bounces are immediate rejections during delivery; asynchronous bounces are delayed notifications sent after initial acceptance.

Email Failures Classifications
Invalid Email Classifications
When emails fail to deliver, understanding the specific reason helps you maintain list hygiene and improve deliverability:
- Blacklist: Address exists on Aurora SendCloud's suppression lists and will be automatically blocked
- Unsubscribe: Recipient has opted out; SendCloud will not deliver future emails to this address
- Server Error: Connection issues prevent our servers from reaching the recipient's mail provider
- Format Error: Email address format is invalid according to Aurora SendCloud or the receiving mail provider
- Not Exist: The receiving mail provider confirmed this email address doesn't exist
- Spam: Content or sending behavior flagged as spam by the receiving mail provider
- Rejected: Email rejected due to recipient-specific settings or provider policies
- Other: Additional failure reasons—view detailed logs by clicking individual records
Managing the Aurora SendCloud Blacklist
When an email shows as "blacklisted," the address appears on one of our suppression lists: Complaint List, Block List, or Bounce List. To resume sending to these addresses:
- Remove the address from the relevant suppression list
- Configure bypass rules for specific scenarios
- Contact support for assistance with list management
Soft Bounce Classifications
Soft bounces indicate temporary delivery issues that may resolve on subsequent attempts:
- Server Error: Recipient's mail provider experienced internal service disruptions
- IP Rejection: Your sending IP or domain is temporarily blocked by the recipient's provider
- Not Exist: Recipient's mail provider couldn't verify the email address exists
- Spam: Email content or sending patterns triggered spam filters
- Rejected: Email rejected due to recipient settings or provider policies
- Other: Other temporary issues preventing delivery
