Barracuda

Overview

The Barracuda Reputation Block List (BRBL) is a real-time database maintained by Barracuda Central that tracks the history of IP addresses and URLs worldwide. This system serves as the core intelligence for Barracuda Networks security products, distinguishing between known spammers and senders with legitimate email practices.

The BRBL is widely used in enterprise environments, including corporate networks, universities, hospitals, and government agencies. Smaller ISPs and web hosts also tap into the free public version of BRBL to protect their users' inboxes.

Impacts

This listing occurs on the IP level. When your IP or domain earns a poor sender reputation in the BRBL, delivery will more than likely be rejected and can also cause deliverability issues. The impact is particularly significant for B2B email campaigns, as a BRBL listing can be more damaging than a Gmail flag—your prospects simply never receive the message with no bounce or notification.

Barracuda's system may also implement throttling before a full block, which means accepting only one email per minute from a suspicious IP. This gives legitimate senders a narrow window to correct behavior.

Mitigation Process

To better understand the potential problems that caused the listing, review the Barracuda Central website. Once you have reviewed, you should then:

  1. Find and correct the root cause of the listing (e.g., compromised server, open relay, spam-sending malware, or improper email practices).
  2. Submit a delisting request form on the Barracuda Central website. Provide your IP, contact information, and an explanation of why you should be removed.
  3. If your request is approved after manual review, removal usually takes 24-72 hours.

Important: The issue must be resolved prior to contacting support. Being honest and transparent will get you to a solution faster. Barracuda is straightforward on what they want to know. If Barracuda detects that a problem is ongoing, they will not remove the block. Additionally, if you delist your IP but the underlying issue is still active, you will be re-listed.
